So we’re counting down our 10 fave summer hits of the past decade (inspired by ), which got me wondering about who’s gonna make the list next year. Ya girl Carly Rae looks like she’ll be dominating the charts well into summer with Call Me Maybe. Maroon 5 is about to drop Overexposed next week and their single Payphone is doing quite well for itself. Then Usher’s abs Usher started doing big things (again) with Scream and Climax. (Yes, his abs are still relevant.) Neither of those songs have to do with sex. And neither of them would make for good background summer-hook-up music. Nor do I condone such acts.

Some people hate to see the name ‘Coldplay‘! Those people are probably annoyed right now. But some of us think of Viva La Vida as the perfect summer anthem for a particular kind of mood. I’m not sure how to describe that mood exactly but I know it involves iced tea.

On Friday, President Barack Obama will meet with Congress and civic leaders, such as Majority Leader Harry Reid,Louis Vuitton Speedy, Rev. Al Sharpton, Speaker of the House John Boehner,?NAACP President Ben Jealous, and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, in two separate meetings to find a balanced solution to the deficit, while strengthening the economy.
Importantly, we heard the direct response of the President and Vice President about their commitment towards doing what is right for the American people. I expressed that position that?National Action Network?and I feel that African-Americans and Latinos will face disproportionate negative impacts if there is any change in spending when it relates to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and across-the-board program cuts.
Appearing jovial and at ease, Speaker of the House John Boehner said he was open to increasing revenue “as long as it is accompanied by spending cuts,” a key provision in the Republican base.
But the expiration of the Bush-era tax cuts just won’t be bad news for the middle class.
“…67 percent of voters said “the goal of tax fairness” was a consideration in their vote, and 58 percent of them backed Obama, while 40 percent backed Romney. Also per the [poll], 61 percent say they agree with Obama’s position on extending the tax cuts for all but the top two percent of earners, and by a 15-point margin they will blame Republicans if a deal can’t be reached.”
While there are major decisions to be made between now and the New Year, this initial meeting is a good start. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney added after the vital meeting, “Both sides agreed that while there may be differences in our preferred approaches, we will continue a constructive process to find a solution and come to a conclusion as soon as possible.”
By last Friday, Boehner held a press conference on whether he — and his fellow Republicans — were willing to work with the President on finding a solution to the Bush-era tax cuts that are set to expire at the top of next year.
In a disappointing address, Boehner seemed to suggest that he would continue to drive home the tax policy points of failed GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, saying that while he was still against raising taxes for the rich, he and his party would agree to budget cuts involving Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, although no specifics on how that would be achieved were given. In addition Boehner said:

“Even as we’re negotiating a broader deficit reduction package, let’s extend the middle-class tax cuts right now. That one step would give millions of families, 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small businesses the certainty that they need going into the new year.
On the other side of the aisle, Minority Leader of the House Nancy Pelosi didn’t reject the GOP-cutting provision, saying, “I feel confident that a solution may be in sight.”
Later that Friday at the White House, the President, while offering an olive branch to all who are willing to ameliorate the lives of the American people, stuck to his guns by saying that he intended to press the will of the people by increasing taxes for the rich and that he would sign a bill that would extend tax cuts for the middle class immediately:
Time will tell if the Republicans decide to keep things civil — and bipartisan — in the months to come.
“It would immediately take a huge chunk of the economic uncertainty off the table. In fact, the Senate has already passed a bill doing exactly this, so all we need is action from the House. And I’ve got the pen ready to sign the bill right away. I’m ready to do it. I’m ready to do it.”
In the President’s second meeting with civic leaders, the Rev. Al Sharpton (pictured above) released a statement that maintained that the energy in the room was “productive.” Sharpton made sure to drive home the plight of African Americans and Latinos, saying that cuts to unemployment, Social Security, and Medicaid, would be “devastating” to our communities.
The meeting was very candid and productive and we were able to share our concerns about the impact that the fiscal cliff negotiations could have on our constituents.

So why? What’s causing this change? The Reserve Bank seems to think that the GFC inspired our “saving is the new black” mentality. Many retailers, no doubt, believe the explosion of online shopping has a lot to do with it. Then there’s the stronger currency, which has enabled us to buy more for less. And then there’s what Philip Lowe, Assistant Governor (Economic) referred to in a as the “pervasive price declines” by local retailers. Over the past twelve months this has seen price index for clothing fall by 6%, major household appliances fall by 4% and the price index for audio, visual and computing equipment fall by 18%. According to government statistics, Aussies are saving their money like never before. Well, not quite never before, but certainly more than we have in the last few decades. We’re paying off our mortgages instead of refinancing, and we’re spending less than we earn. No wonder the retailers are getting edgy. In fact their indicates that 50% of shoppers plan to spend less this year.
Okay where was I? Ah savings. Yep, we’re getting pretty damn good at it apparently. We’re now saving around 10% of our income … up from a bit below 0% five years ago. That’s a definite improvement. And in fact for every dollar of extra income that we earn (as in payrises, etc) we’re saving 35%. Again up from zero. Good stuff.
Ah, it’s that good old Economics 101 concept of supply and demand. Otherwise known as the discounting benefit of playing hard to get (financially speaking)!
Of course, online shopping is getting a fair whack of the blame for lower spending and sluggish department store sales figures and as a side note, the Productivity Commission inquiry into the future of Australia’ retail sector is now open for submissions and the Assistant Treasurer, Bill Shorten, is looking for your comments. Or in his words: “I strongly encourage brick and mortar and online retailers, consumer groups, unions, shoppers, suppliers and other experts and stakeholders to make submissions to the inquiry.” So if it’s something that interests you, then .
Which is a good thing, I reckon. Because seriously, how much stuff can people need?
So again what’s causing this change? Are you saving almost by default because things are costing less due to the wonders of online shopping and local discounting? Or are you saving on purpose courtesy of a GFC-inspired caution? Or of course, not saving at all? And if you are paying down that mortgage, paying off the credit card and stacking some money away for a rainy day, what are your tips for the rest of us?
The 122,000 ton ship, which at 317m long covers the length of three city blocks, will be the largest to have ever been based in Australia when it arrives next December.
In a major boost to the local economy, about half of the 2850 passengers on board are expected to come from overseas, with the UK and North America expected to be the biggest markets.

If we heed the headlines of media accounts about how kids are using social media today, there is certainly cause for worry about how they are using the growing number of hours that they are online. According to a report published in 2010, 40 percent of youth ages 8-18 spend an average of an hour a day communicating with their friends on social networking sites such as Facebook.
A new report written for the Cooney Center by two of North America's most promising young scholars, Dr. Sara Grimes and Dr. Deborah Fields, and generously supported by Cisco Systems and the Digital Media and Learning initiative at University of California, Irvine, documents what, how and why kids are participating in growing numbers on social networking sites, both at school and at home. As the , "commercial companies and educational non-profits alike are eager to provide new spaces for such participation, even though that means navigating some tricky regulatory requirements, not to mention shifting public opinion. Similarly, recent report finds that 90 percent of American teenagers have used some form of social media -- with 75 percent currently maintaining a profile on a social networking site like Facebook or Twitter. (Interestingly, this report was published just two years after the Kaiser report and notes that 51 percent of teens visit social media sites daily -- a number that is likely to keep growing even larger as time goes on.)
There are other tangible reasons to worry about social media including incursions on privacy, compelling discussions of cyberbullying, and overt, crass marketing techniques by some corporations intent on gaining a foothold among an increasingly powerful demographic -- kids and youth.
Kids Online also calls for national investment to advance a new research agenda: to talk directly to families and educators about the changing character of young people's digital lives. The authors suggest that the current discussion of overhauling COPPA requirements on privacy and safety is overdue, as we must revisit key policy questions to figure out who is actually regulating these spaces, under what criteria, and with whose consent. We need to know more about the ways in which online social time can be rebalanced so that the hours are not dedicated to "empty calories" or even potentially dangerous activity. To gain a better sense of what is next, we need greater insight into the role that families play in promoting the regular habits that children develop during their primary years before they become active in social media.
Every concerned parent and educator in America is concerned with these issues, and has engaged in fervent discussions with youth. But can our debates help us find a good balance between the impulse to protect our children and finding ways in which social media can be harnessed for inspiration? New research from communications scholars and learning scientists suggests some specific ways that social media can promote children's learning, including their technical literacies, and important social skills, as well as key academic skills through networked participation.
Grimes and Fields point out that we do know some important features of social network sites that can be beneficial. There are numerous opportunities for learning on these sites including: spaces for sharing creations, getting feedback on writing, collaborating, developing literacies for reading not just printed text but visual images, hyperlinked information, and finding ways to delve into the very makings of computers (i.e., computational literacy). The possibilities for using social networking forums to enhance and support children's participation in cultural and civic engagement are also extremely exciting. There is some untapped promise for social development, too -- social networking forums can provide lower risk environments that allow kids to interact with other youth that they might be intimidated to talk to in "real life."
The authors also point out that kids themselves will likely, and unpredictably, create the "next big thing" in social networks through their own participation. It is their passion we should be promoting.

A single truck can deliver the HPM heat source to a site. The device is supposed to be able to produce 70 MW of thermal energy for 5 years. That means that the truck will be delivering about 10.5 trillion BTU's to the site. Natural gas costs about $7 per million BTU which would would cost $73 million.
That is about 3 times as much as the announced selling price for an HPM, but the advantage does not stop there - the HPM is targeted for places where there are no gas pipelines to deliver gas, so natural gas is not available at any price.
Instead, it would be better to compare the HPM to diesel fuel, which currently costs about 2 times as much per unit of useful heat as natural gas and still requires some form of delivery for remote locations. In some places, fuel transportation costs are two or three times as much as the cost of the fuel from the central supply points.
In certain very difficult terrains, or in places where there are people who like to shoot at tankers, delivery costs can be 100 times as much as the basic cost of the fuel.

While it's a bit of a wait, the good news for fans is that the community college-set comedy will be airing in its traditional home of Thursdays (in the slot occupied by the departing "30 Rock") instead of Fridays, where it had been slotted for this season. Less than two weeks before season 4′s planned Oct. 19 debut, though, NBC announced that it was postponing "Community," along with fellow Friday comedy "Whitney," while it focused on promoting other nights of its schedule. He considers his paper optimistic because he assumes that core degradation can be countered.
Nevins makes an argument similar to Rider's in [W.M. Nevins, Phys. Plasmas <2> (10), 3804 (October, 1995)], where he shows that the fusion gain (ratio of fusion power produced to the power required to maintain the non-equilibrium ion distribution function) is limited to 0.1 assuming that the device is fueled with a mixture of deuterium and tritium. A fusion gain of about 10 is required for net energy production.
Rider's chief criticism is related to the recirculating power required in a colliding beam machine: "In virtually all cases, this minimum recirculating power is substantially larger than the fusion power, so barring the discovery of methods of recirculating the power at exceedingly high efficiencies, reactors employing plasmas not in thermodynamic equilibrium will not be able to produce net power". This is a very valid criticism and is acknowledged by Robert Bussard. However, Bussard claims that the discovery of what he terms the Wiffle Ball effect and by circulating electrons escaping from the Wiffle ball at high efficiencies he can get the total electron circulation efficiency into the 99.999% to 99.9999% range, making colling beam machines of his proposed design viable for power production. Experiments are currently under way (Jan. 2008) to test Dr. Bussard's ideas.
